Carlton Culmsee came to BYU in 1929, where he was a journalism instructor and secretary to the Extension Division. Additionally Culmsee worked as a part-time correspondent for the Associated Press and edited Y News for six semesters.

In 1939 he was appointed chair of the Journalism Department, which included responsibility for the Extension Division and News Bureau. He continued to serve as department chair until 1944.

In 1942 Culmsee left BYU to enter the armed forces during WWII. After his release in 1945, Culmsee did not return to BYU, but rather accepted a position at Utah State Agricultural College. (Pratte, 16)
