Doug Stout graduated from BYU in 1987 with a degree in Design and Technology. Stout is a native of Edinburgh, Scotland. He immigrated to the U.S. in 1949. His interest in design began as a child, and he says he was always interested in "making stuff."

Stout is a retired professor of design at BYU and a former chair for the Visual Arts Department (1972-1985). In the summer of 2010, Stout's life work was featured in the exhibit "A Maker's Life," at the Covey Center in Provo, Utah.
