Steven P. Johnson has been a professor in the BYU School of Music since 1987.

Dr. Johnson's professional activities also include editing and contributions to The New York Schools of Music Visual Arts, as well as numerous entries for New Groves Dictionary of Music and Musicians, among others. Dr. Johnson has been invited to present papers on numerous occasions, for events such as the Society of Music Theory and American Musicological Society Regional Conference, and the Centennial Festival at the New School in New York City. Dr. Johnson's professional commitments have been to the Rank Advancement Committee both as a Chair and committee member, an Area Head of Musicology, and a member of the Department Search Committee of Music History.

Johnson received the Alcuin Fellowship at BYU's Annual University Conference in 2007.
