Shelbi Jia Anderson graduated from Brigham Young University in 2015 with a bachelor's degree in public relations.

In 2014, she traveled with fellow students Jared Jakins, Ricardo Quintana and Jeffrey Wade and faculty Ed Carter, Jeff Sheets and Brent Barson to Chile, where the group spent two weeks gathering information about the reform of higher education in the country in collaboration with students at Universidad Mayor. This project was funded by BYU's Laycock Center. At the 2015 regional Mark of Excellence Awards for the Society of Professional Journalists, the group won the Online In-Depth Reporting Award for their piece "Breaking the class ceiling," and later in the year they were announced as finalists for the national award. The piece was also a gold winner in the 45th Creativity Student Media & Interactive Design Awards.

The same year, DUST, an alternate-reality game that aims to get kids involved in STEM-based learning, was released. Anderson was a student project manager for the development of the game.
