Overview
Reed Smoot is an award-winning cinematographer, specializing in IMAX and large format films.
Education and Career
Smoot graduated from BYU in 1969 with a BA in Communications and began to work on various projects for the Church. He worked as a cinematographer and director of photography on several LDS classic films such as The Emmett Smith Story (1979), Uncle Ben (1978), The Mailbox (1977), The Phonecall (1977), John Baker's Last Race (1976), The Lost Manuscript (1974), and Cipher in the Snow (1973).
Smoot’s career has since evolved to include many feature films, including Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey, and the Academy Award winning documentary, The Great American Cowboy, which was directed by fellow alumnus Kieth Merrill.
Smoot has worked with IMAX, television, and various other formats. He has continued to work with the Church on projects such as Legacy and Mountain of the Lord.
He currently works as a free-lance cinematographer and director.
Awards and Recognition
In 2003, the College of Fine Arts and Communications selected Smoot as their Honored Alumnus of the year.
