Raised as a jazz trumpeter in the San Francisco Bay Area, Nathan Botts now enjoys a diverse career as a classical soloist, orchestral musician, composer, improviser, and specialist on the historic natural trumpet.

Education

While in college, Nathan was the first trumpeter to ever win both the Jazz and Classical Solo competitions of the International Trumpet Guild in the same year. He studied jazz at the Manhattan School of Music and is a graduate of both the BYU School of Music and The Juilliard School.

Career

Botts has appeared as a soloist in Beijing with the China National Symphony, in Zurich with the Verbier Festival Chamber Orchestra, and in the United States with the Utah Premiere Brass.

Making New York City his home, Botts performs regularly with the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, Brooklyn Philharmonic, Riverside Symphony, Paragon Ragtime Orchestra, Second Instrumental Unit, Wet Ink Ensemble, and Concert Royal (natural trumpet).

In 2007 Nathan was one of 16 musicians selected to pilot the new performance and teaching fellowship known as The Academy – a program of Carnegie Hall, The Juilliard School, and the Weill Music Institute (ACJW).

In addition to giving regular performances with Ensemble ACJW, Botts works as a teaching artist in NYC public schools where he teaches music composition to students in the Bronx. Based on his work there, he is creating an interactive educational experience for children that will be presented as a Carnegie Hall Family Concert entitled "Anyone Can Make Music.”
