Artist Statement

Over the past few years, textile design and decorative arts patterning have become a significant interest in my artwork, especially the evolution of design techniques, the iconography of textile motifs, and the vocabulary of pattern and decoration. My paintings are explorations in the interaction of colors, patterns, and ornamental embellishment. I begin with patterned upholstery fabric or wallpaper that provide the foundation of color and pattern. My use of color is an emotional and sensory response allowing me to add to this foundation. Many of the motifs in my paintings and drawings come from historic architectural and interior details, reflecting my interest in the decorative arts and their historical settings. The cultural role of pattern and decoration is indicative and fascinating, as well as the patterns of thought and emotional responses they evoke. I seek a more personal interaction with these interests through my painting and drawing and the juxtaposition of old and new forms. Just as personality is revealed through the process and experience of painting, the choices made in design and decoration become an externalization of the self: a manifestation of personal identity, as well as a representation of the enigmatic nature of personal style.
