Mary Benson Richards
From College of Fine Arts and Communications
Mary Benson Richards graduated from BYU in 1983 with a degree in Music Performance, with her specialized instrument being the flute. Richards went on to receive a master’s degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Richards planned to teach music and achieved an advanced degree so she could teach in an academic setting. That academic setting turned out to be her own home. Richards is the mother of six, all of whom play at least one instrument.
Together, the family performs chamber music, presenting firesides and concerts. Individually her children have excelled, performing throughout the world and country.
Richards plays the flute with her friend, Lysa Wight Rytting in the Amaryllys Duo and has made a CD and given concerts. For several years Richards was principal flutist with the Utah Valley Symphony.
