Marilyn Berrett is the Dance Department Chair at Brigham Young University. She was reappointed as chair of the Dance Department for a second term in 2014.

In 1979, Berrett received a bachelor's degree in dance performance from the University of Utah. In 1984, she received a master's degree in dance from BYU. Her thesis was on Boys and Dance, and included a statistical analysis of their attitude toward dance before and after participating in a dance program.

Berrett joined the Dance faculty at BYU in 1985. She served on the University Faculty Advisory Council from 1998 to 2001. She has also been the director of the Dancer's Company, now known as the Contemporary Dance Theatre. She has also been involved with the Young Ambassadors and choreography for various productions. Berrett also served as the faculty advisor for the BYU dance company Kinnect. She has taught classes in technique, composition, pedagogy, methods, directing of companies, and orientation.

In 1995, Berrett was awarded the Teaching Excellence Award from the Department of Dance. In 2010, she was honored with the Alumni Professorship award and was invited to deliver an address at one of BYU's devotionals. She has served on BYU's A.R.T.S. Partnership coordinating council. Berrett presents professional development workshops for arts leadership organizations, professional dance companies and universities in the US and abroad. She is the recipient of BYU's 2013 Alumni Professorship, 1998 Excellence in Teaching award, and grants from the Utah Arts Council, the BYU Laycock Center, Mary Lou Fulton Chair, and Office of Research.

In 2013, Berrett and Associate Professor of Dance Pam Musil directed the Buckaroo: Cowboy Poetry in Motion project, which was funded by a grant from the Laycock Center for Creative Collaboration in the Arts. The project brought together student musicians, poets, and choreographers, as well as professional cowboy poets, to produce an evening-length themed dance concert. Berrett choreographed two numbers for the event, "Legends" and "At the Buckaroo Ball." The following year, they traveled to the NDEO Conference in November with Paul Bliss (cowboy poet) and student Stefani S. Mortensen to present a session about the collaborative project.

In 2015, Berrett was a supervisor of the Kinnect Dance Company's presentations at the 13th Dance and the Child International Congress in Copenhagen, Denmark. The funding for the group's trip and participation was funded in part by BYU's Laycock Center.

She has done extensive work with dance for younger children and has studied dance as a subject matter in children’s literature. Berrett has also researched field work with teachers and students in elementary schools.
