Before working at Ogilvy & Mather, Kelly spent five years at Bonneville Media Communications in Salt Lake City as a senior copywriter and producer, where his key account was the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He also has worked at David W. Evans Advertising in Salt Lake City as a copywriter and producer and at Osmond Commercial Productions in Orem as an associate producer.
Kelly is currently chairing a media task force, under the direction of Elder M. Russell Ballard, charged with the assignment to find new ways to use paid media to enhance the missionary efforts of the church. The task force is responsible for the "Truth Restored" campaign, which ran from May to December 2007. (Johnson)
Kelly graduated from the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California, with a BFA in film. He lives in Provo with his wife Khaliel, and the two are the parents of nine children, several of whom attending BYU. Kelly loves the musical theatre. In his spare time, he and Michael McLean co-authored The Ark, a musical about Noah and his family, which premiered off-Broadway in 2005.
Kelly delivered the Raymond E. and Ida Lee Beckham Lecture in Communications in 2008. In 2011 Kelly received a grant from the Laycock Center for Creative Collaboration in the Arts to complete a project documenting the story of the first LDS public service spots directed to children. Professor Kelly found TMA student Wayne Nilsson, a master technician, editor, and cameraman who helped create and edit the documentary. The team's final project was premiered at the LDS Film Festival in January 2012
