Pianist/vocalist Kathryn Merriam grew up in Toronto, Ontario Canada -- a city known for its thriving and vibrant jazz scene. Daughter of the founder of the Merriam School of Music -- “widely renowned within North America as the most innovative private music school operating today” -- she was immersed in a musical education from a very young age, studying everything from flute and trumpet to piano and percussion.

Throughout her teenage years, Merriam realized her passion for singing and playing the piano, and began to work diligently to develop these talents. She studied voice with internationally acclaimed recording artist Rikki Rumball, and piano with Jennifer Tung, one of Ontario’s most sought-after piano instructors. After her senior year of high school, she discovered her niche in jazz.

Merriam is currently attending Brigham Young University, where she will graduate with a [[category:BA Music|BA in music] in August 2009. While attending BYU, she has participated in a number of jazz combos and ensembles, including the internationally-acclaimed big band Synthesis, directed by Ray Smith.

Merriam currently resides in Provo, Utah, and performs all over the state in various groups and as a solo artist. She also works as a piano teacher, specializing in jazz piano.

In 2009 she became the first student to perform as part of the Jazz Piano Artists of Utah concert series.
