John Marshall 1939-2008
John Marshall was a talented artist, beloved friend, and an Industrial Design pioneer for Brigham Young University. Marshall’s life was characterized by service to others, serving extensively throughout the Church.
Early Life
Marshall was born on He was born September 5, 1939 in El Centro, California to Carl J. Marshall and Martha Zoe Emerson. Marshall converted to the LDS Church and went on to serve a mission in Norway from 1963-1965 (Marshall).
Education
After returning from his mission, Marshall attended the Kansas City Art Institute and the Art Center School of California. He eventually obtained a BFA from BYU and then an MA in 1968.
Career
In 1967, Marshall joined the BYU faculty, where he taught for the next 41 years. He is noted as the creator of the Industrial Design program at BYU, a program which first existed as part of the Visual Arts Department, and has since been relocated to the College of Engineering and Technology. Marshall’s extensive knowledge of Industrial Design resulted in invitations to lecture world wide (Industrial Design).
From 1969-1971, Marshall worked as a Designer for Hewlett Packard. Then, from 1974-1976, Marshall was the Principle Lecturer at Hong Kong Polytechnic University. From 1982-1983 he was a Visiting Professor at Hebrew University in Jerusalem, Israel. From 1990-1991, Marshall was a Visiting Professor at the Art Center College of Design in Leture De Pelis, Switzerland.
One of Marshall’s favorite areas of Industrial Design was Automobile Design, and he would seize opportunities to lecture on it (Knudtson). In 2000, Marshall became the Project Chairman of the Hummer re-design project; helping students create a new look for GM’s hummer (DeMucha).
Personal & Family Life
Marshall married Bonnie Brown in the Los Angeles Temple in 1965 and together had five children; Stephanie Felt, Susannah Marshall, John E. Marshall, Sarah Longman, and Meredith Simpson. There family has since been joined by ten grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
The Marshall’s enjoyed serving together in the Church and went on a mission to Hawaii from 2006-2007. John held many callings in the LDS Church, serving as the Bishop of a BYU ward, a Branch President at the MTC, and in various leadership positions abroad.
Marshall was eager to share his vibrant testimony of the restored Gospel of Jesus Christ. He was always ready to lend a helping hand and to share a laugh with his neighbors and friends (Marshall).
On January 18, 2008, Marshall passed away in Provo, Utah following a difficult battle with cancer.
