Heather May Schwartz graduated from BYU in 1992 with a degree in Art. Shortly after graduating, Schwartz married and began to have children. During this time she took a break from art, but around 2003, just before her husband accepted a position as a civilian contractor on Guantanamo Bay, Schwartz rekindled her passion and began to paint once more.

Schwartz and her family resided on the 45-square-mile military base for six years. During that time, Schwartz chose to see the beauty around her and capture it in her paintings. Her work portrays an aspect of like on Guantanamo Bay that is not typically portrayed by the media.

In July 2009, Schwartz's collection of paintings, known as Life at Guantanamo Bay were displayed in the Eccles Fine Arts Building at Dixie State College in St. George, Utah.
