Harold Laycock
Harold R. Laycock made many contributions to the College of Fine Arts and Communications which are honored and remembered by the Laycock Center for Collaboration in the Arts.
Laycock was born November 14, 1916, in Rayond, Alberta, Canada to George and Fern Laycock. He completed his Bachelor of Music (1937) and his Master of Music (1947) at Brigham Young University. He played violin in the BYU Symphony Orchestra and then the viola is the Utah State Symphony from 1940-1942. He was also the principal violist for the Utah Valley Symphony for many years.
While attending BYU he met Lois Evelyn Peterson, whom he courted and eventually married on December 23, 1937 in the Salt Lake Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. In 1949 he was hired as a music instructor at BYU and continued there for 33 years until he retired. In 1981 he received the Karl G. Maeser Outstanding Teacher Award.
Harold served in many callings for the LDS Church, including a mission with Lois to Tempe, Arizona from 1982-1984. On April 17, 2000 Laycock passed away at the age of 83. Twelve years later, on September 23, 2012, Lois passed away peacefully in her home.
