Elise Soukup is an American journalist and lecturer. She currently writes for Newsweek magazine.

Education
Elise Soukup graduated from Brigham University in 2002 with a Bachelor of Communications and a minor in English.
Internship at Newsweek
Soukup interned at Newsweek in 2002, working in the Periscope department, a section in the front of the magazine that consists of short hard news and feature stories. She worked under two editors in the Periscope department, formulating story ideas, contributing items and editing other reporter’s pieces. For her accomplishments, she was named the Cooperative Education and Internship Association’s 2002 intern of the year.
Employment at Newsweek
In 2003, Soukup was officially hired by Newsweek as a senior editorial assistant. She has since been promoted to Assistant Editor and, most recently, Associate Editor. Soukup has a particular interest in religion stories. She wrote an October 2005 cover story, “A Mormon Odyssey,” which examined the past and future of the Mormon faith.
Soukup also covered the Elizabeth Smart abduction, various happenings in polygamous sects and the schism in the Episcopalian church. Most recently, she contributed to “A Mormon’s Journey,” a cover story on Mitt Romney, a candidate for the Republican nomination for president.
Other
Soukup has lectured at New York University and Brigham Young University. In February 2008 she will speak at Brigham Young University-Hawaii. Soukup took more than a year of maternity leave, following the birth of her son in 2006. She returned to Newsweek in January ‘08, and now works part-time in the national affairs department. Soukup lives in New York with her husband and son.
