David Jon Banks graduated from Brigham Young University in 2015 with a bachelor's degree in media arts studies.

In 2010, he played a servant in BYU's production of Tartuffe. The following year, he collaborated with other student employees of the Laycock Center for Creative Collaboration in the Arts and BYU faculty to create the exhibit Beauty and Belief, which was featured in BYU's Museum of Art in 2012. He served as a Motion Graphics Designer for the project.

In 2012, his film production skills were tested when he was asked to participate in the Love Unbroken project, funded by the Laycock Center. The project involved filming a dance performed and choreographed by BYU dance students and faculty.

In 2014, he served as the assistant director, the director of photography and the composer for BYU's production of Our Town, directed by Stephanie Breinholt. In 2015, he received a national award from the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival for Special Achievement in Film and Projection Design in the production.
