Charles 'Charlie' W. Zobell graduated from Brigham Young University in 1974 with a bachelor's degree in communications. While he was there he was mentored by then faculty member Nelson B. Wadsworth, who helped him sell his first story to the AP and supported his education and success.

Zobell is now the editor of the Las Vegas Review, Nevada's largest newspaper, and had his own opportunity to mentor a student. In early 2011 the department of communications at BYU launched an alumni mentoring program where 150 BYU alumni signed up to advise students in advertising, public relations, broadcasting, and journalism. Charlie's lucky student was Brooke Self, who majored in Journalism. Zobell critiqued her work, gave her feedback, and even went to Provo to meet with her one-on-one. Through their discussions of the ever-changing world of Journalism, Zobell encouraged Brooke by telling her the world always needs good writers and editors.
