Barbara S. Allen graduated from Brigham Young University with a bachelor’s degree in Music in 1959 and a master’s degree in Music in 1961. She later received her doctorate from the University of Illinois. She is currently back at her alma mater as a faculty member in the School of Music and emphasizes keyboard studies.

Allen was recognized as the Honored Alumnus of BYU's College of Fine Arts and Communications in 1988 during the campus' Homecoming festivities.

Barbara studied with Soulima Stravinsky, son of the famed composer. She has performed as both a pianist and soprano in Germany, the former USSR, and in the Temple Square Concert Series. Throughout her career she worked with composer Deon Nielsen Price and also commissioned him to compose Allegra Barbara, which she premiered in 1988.

Professor Allen teaches at BYU and has previously taught at California State University, Long Beach.
